Star of Bethlehem
Volumes have been written by people trying to prove what the star of Bethlehem was. Some speculate that it was a certain alignment of planets or other heavenly bodies. Most of these theories assume that it was a just-in-time event. They assume that on that blessed night these events took place to form the “star”. Others will point out that the magi had followed the star from afar so the star had to have been present for an extended amount of time.
It should be observed that nowhere in scripture does it indicate that the star was present on the night of Christ’s birth. The magi were not, as so many Christmas pageants portray, present at the manger. The Bible states that they came to a house not a manger. Scholars have surmised that Jesus was about two years old at the time of the visit. This is based on Herod’s questioning of the magi as when this special birth had taken place and his reaction of having all male children two years old or under killed .There are others that believe the star was indeed a star and was a special creation of God for the purpose of guiding the magi to the Christ Child.
The debate will probably go on for many years to come. However the Bible reveals the truth about the star of Bethlehem. The star was not in the sky at all. The true Star of Bethlehem was our long awaited Creator in human flesh. It was He that the magi sought not just some special night light. We must do likewise. It is very easy in our commercial world to set our eyes on the glittering lights and entirely miss The Greatest Light of All.
May you all have a very Merry Christmas and follow Bethlehem’s Star through the New Year.
